چکیده
Invasive deep brain stimulation has proven to be clinically therapeutic for patients with drug-refractory epilepsy. The aim of this study was develop a novel transcranial electrical device as noninvasive modality seizure treatment. We fabricated and tested it in four swine brains depth electrodes surgically implanted under neuro-navigation. Stimulation two high-frequency alternating currents used cause an interference envelope. Acute focal epilepsy induced by subcortical injection penicillin specific anesthesia protocol. frequency electric field the hippocampus were investigated. frequencies (2 k 2.14 kHz) successfully caused envelope 140 Hz. With 1 mA stimulation, degraded gradually situ 0.68 mV/mm hippocampi. mode attenuated originally epileptic form discharges. No neuronal or axonal injuries noted histopathologically after stimulation. feasibility biosafety our proposed preliminarily verified. Future translational research should focus on electrode deposition parameters quantitative effect.

متن کاملSpatiotemporal structure of intracranial electric fields induced by transcranial electric stimulation in humans and nonhuman primates
Transcranial electric stimulation (TES) is an emerging technique, developed to non-invasively modulate brain function. However, the spatiotemporal distribution of the intracranial electric fields induced by TES remains poorly understood. In particular, it is unclear how much current actually reaches the brain, and how it distributes across the brain. Lack of this basic information precludes a f...
متن کاملStudying Network Mechanisms Using Intracranial Stimulation in Epileptic Patients
Patients suffering from focal drug-resistant epilepsy who are explored using intracranial electrodes allow to obtain data of exceptional value for studying brain dynamics in correlation with pathophysiological and cognitive processes. Direct electrical stimulation (DES) of cortical regions and axonal tracts in those patients elicits a number of very specific perceptual or behavioral responses, ...

Low intensity electric fields have been suggested to affect the ongoing neuronal activity in vitro and in human studies. However, the physiological mechanism of how weak electrical fields affect and interact with intact brain activity is not well understood. We performed in vivo extracellular and intracellular recordings from the neocortex and hippocampus of anesthetized rats and extracellular ...
